Those who work in law enforcement often wish the public had a better understanding
of the day-to-day operations of a police department. The Norwich Police Department
is making that wish a reality by offering a 13-week class for Norwich residents
to learn about their Police Department. This course covers all that goes on
in the Norwich Police Department and there is no charge for the course.
Our Citizens' Academy continues to thrive and involve all members of the Department.
Since 2001 several Norwich residents and business owners have attended. The
Chief of Police and seven Police Officers participate as instructors, helping
to dispel myths, show where tax dollars are spent and give a realistic view
of day to day operations of the Norwich Police.
The course involves classroom instruction as well as several hands on activities
involving the Breathalyzer, traffic RADAR and firearms. The course includes
shoot/don't shoot scenarios putting the student in the shoes of an officer
making split second decisions. There is also a ride along scheduled for students
to go on patrol with Norwich Officers. The Citizens Academy culminates with
a graduation ceremony in the Common Council Chambers with Members of the Council
and Mayor in attendance.
If you are a Norwich resident or business owner and would like to attend the
Academy you should contact your Ward Alderman, the Mayor or the Chief of Police
to be placed on the list for the next academy session.
